Wine Tasting List

Macon Pierreclos Lieu Secret, Verget 2018

Region: Burgundy Subregion: Maconnais

93, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (244), August 2019

The 2018 Mâcon-Pierreclos Lieu Sécret originates in the only part of lieu-dit Le Chavigne that Guffens doesn't own himself, but his neighbor refuses to sell the vineyard, consenting only to sell the grapes. The resulting wine is superb, unfurling in the glass with aromas of citrus zest, Anjou pear, wheat toast and pastry cream, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate with unmistakable old-vine concentration, muscular structuring extract and a racy spine of acidity. Tensile and stony, this is a Verget wine that wouldn't be out of place in the Guffens-Heynen cellar, and it comes warmly recommended. Drink 2020-2035.

Calon Ségur 1982

Region: Bordeaux Subregion: Saint Estephe

94+, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (193), June 2009

Like Certan de May, I bought this in both half and 750 ml bottles. Only recently have the half bottles reached full maturity, and the 750 ml remains a massive, backward wine for long-term aging. A dense, opaque garnet color is followed by notes of roasted meats, herbs, black currants, incense, and damp earth. Full-bodied, still extremely tannic (sweet but noticeable tannins), rich, and backward, where perfectly stored, this 1982 will last for another 50 years. The estate has always compared it to their 1947, which is still a vibrant wine, and the 1982 should be just as profound. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2040.

La Gaffelière 2005

Region: Bordeaux Subregion: St Emilion

96, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (176), April 2008

The finest La Gaffeliere I have ever tasted, the prodigious 2005 boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a flamboyant bouquet of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, incense, and Asian spice. Fabulously deep and full-bodied as well as ethereal and exceptionally elegant for its explosive richness and intensity, its lightness of being reflects the vineyard’s sensational terroir. This succulent beauty appears to be approachable, but that belies some significant tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2030+.
